Self Credit Builder Review 2026

The only credit-builder product that bundles an installment loan AND an optional secured Visa from one provider. $25โ€“$150 monthly plans, 24-month terms, all-three-bureau reporting. Verified against self.inc on May 14, 2026.

Quick Answer

  • Best for: thin-file or no-credit borrowers who want both an installment tradeline AND a path to a secured Visa from the same provider โ€” no Chime/Current banking switch required.
  • Skip if: you already have an installment loan on file (auto, student) or you cannot reliably make 24 monthly payments (a late payment damages credit, defeating the purpose).
  • Real cost: roughly $90โ€“$100 over 24 months on the $25/month plan ($9 admin fee + ~$89 interest at 15.92% APR), with ~$511 returned at maturity.
  • Real alternatives: Credit Strong for larger payback ($1Kโ€“$25K via Magnum), or Chime Credit Builder if you want revolving credit instead and already bank with Chime.

Why we picked it

Self is the only credit-builder product on our list that gives you both an installment loan AND a clear graduation path to a secured Visa credit card from the same provider. That matters because your FICO score has a "credit mix" component (10% of the score) that rewards having both installment AND revolving tradelines on your file. Most credit-builder products give you one or the other โ€” Self gives you both.

The Credit Builder Account works like a CD savings plan: you commit to a 24-month term at $25, $35, $48, or $150 per month. The full loan amount is held in an FDIC-insured CD at one of Self's three partner banks (Lead Bank, Sunrise Banks N.A., or SouthState/Atlantic Capital Bank). You make monthly payments for 24 months. At the end, the CD unlocks and you receive the principal back, minus interest and the $9 admin fee. Throughout the 24-month term, Self reports your on-time payments to all three credit bureaus monthly.

Self changed the secured Visa eligibility rules in January 2025. You no longer need an active Credit Builder Account to qualify โ€” you can fund the secured card directly with $100 by debit card or bank transfer. This is a meaningful improvement: previously, the secured card was a graduation product, but now it's a standalone option for users who want only the revolving tradeline without committing to 24 monthly loan payments. The secured Visa has a $0 annual fee for the first year, then $25 per year thereafter, and reports to all three bureaus.

Compared to Credit Strong, Self is simpler and more standardized (four plan tiers vs Credit Strong's three product lines with overlapping options) but has a lower payback ceiling โ€” Credit Strong's Magnum tier goes up to $25,000 of payback vs Self's $3,069 ceiling on the $150 plan. Compared to Chime Credit Builder and Current Build Card, Self gives you an installment tradeline (which the deposit-funded cards cannot offer) and doesn't require switching your banking relationship.

Best for

  • Thin-file or no-credit borrowers who need to add an installment tradeline to their FICO file
  • People who want a forced-savings outcome (you walk away with $400โ€“$2,700+ in cash after 24 months)
  • Anyone who wants both installment + revolving credit-mix from one provider (CB loan + secured Visa)
  • People who can't qualify for a card or don't want to switch their bank to Chime or Current

Skip if

  • You already have an installment loan on file (auto, student, mortgage) โ€” the marginal credit-mix lift is small
  • You can't reliably make 24 monthly payments โ€” a missed payment hurts credit the same as any installment loan
  • You need immediate access to cash โ€” the CD is locked until the term ends (or you close and forfeit some history)
  • You already bank with Chime โ€” Chime Credit Builder is free, with no APR and no monthly commitment

The four Self Credit Builder plans

All four plans are 24-month terms with a $9 one-time admin fee.

Honest watch-outs

APRs are real and 15.5%โ€“15.9% on every plan

Self trades a known modest cost for credit-building. On the $25 plan you pay roughly $89 in interest + $9 admin = ~$98 over 24 months to access $511 in savings. That's cheap for what you get (a 24-month installment trade-line on all three bureaus), but it's not zero. Don't let marketing language about "savings building" obscure the loan interest.

Missed or late payments will hurt your credit

The Credit Builder Account reports as a real installment loan to all three bureaus. A 30-day late payment shows up on your credit report exactly the way a missed auto loan or student loan payment would, and stays there for up to seven years. If you can't commit to 24 months of consistent monthly payments, the deposit-funded options (Chime Credit Builder, Current Build Card) carry no late-payment risk because there's no balance to carry.

Secured Visa fees and APR stack on top

The Self Visa Credit Card has a $0 annual fee the first year, then $25 per year. It also carries a 27.49% variable APR if you carry a balance, plus up to $15 late and return fees. If you only ever use the card for small purchases you pay off in full each month, none of these apply. But if you treat the secured Visa like a traditional credit card and carry balances, the costs add up fast. Use it only as a credit-building rail, not a borrowing tool.

Reporting failures are a documented risk

Self's entire value proposition depends on accurate monthly bureau reporting. The BBB profile contains 2026 complaints describing accounts that were opened, paid on time for months, but never reported to one or more of the bureaus โ€” leaving the customer paying for credit-building results they never received. The frequency is low relative to overall customer volume, but it's worth keeping an eye on your credit report 60โ€“90 days after enrolling to verify the trade-line is actually showing up across all three bureaus.
