$20K parked at 0.5% vs 4.00% APY = $700/year you're leaving behind.

Big-bank savings accounts pay an average of 0.42% APY. The top FDIC-insured online banks pay 3.50–5.00%. Same money, same insurance, same liquidity — different interest. The switch takes ~10 minutes online and the rate hits the same day. The bank-bonus stack on top adds another $1,500–$3,000 in year one.

  • Switching to a 4% HYSA on $20K = $700/year extra at zero risk (FDIC up to $250K)
  • Stacking 4 checking bonuses at $400 avg = $1,600 in year-one cash
  • A 12-month CD ladder locks today's rate without giving up monthly access via staggered maturity

Quick answer

Which banking pick fits your situation?

Want the highest savings APY
Want guaranteed savings rate (lock the APY)
Want a checking account that pays a sign-up bonus
Want the highest-yield checkable account
Want a no-fee checking account

Decision matrix

Which path fits you?

You can lock money for 12+ months
You need monthly access to your savings
You want to write checks against high-yield balance
You're switching banks and want a sign-up bonus
Your current bank charges fees you didn't see coming
You want to keep cash AND earn interest in your checking account
Methodology & how we picked these

We rank deposit accounts by published APY, FDIC/NCUA insurance status, monthly fee, minimum balance, and whether the rate is currently available to new customers (banks frequently advertise rates that have closed to new applications). Rate verification runs Monday at 9 AM PT against each issuer's published disclosure; if a rate has shifted by more than 25 bps since our last refresh, we update the comparison and bump the page's What-Changed callout. Banks with fee-trap structures (high overdraft, dormancy fees, account-closure penalties) are excluded from our top-of-the-list recommendations regardless of APY.
