How we built this tool

How we compute net pay

Step 1

Pre-tax first, then federal taxable

401(k) and health premiums come off gross before any tax. Then the 2025 standard deduction comes off federal taxable income. State tax uses the full AGI โ€” most states don't mirror federal deductions.

Step 2

FICA is two taxes, not one

6.2% Social Security (capped at $168,600 of wages in 2025) + 1.45% Medicare (uncapped). High earners pay an extra 0.9% Medicare over $200K single / $250K MFJ.

Step 3

State rate is simplified

We use a flat state rate for transparency. Real state brackets vary โ€” California is progressive up to 13.3%, Texas is 0%. Use your state's top bracket for a conservative estimate.
